Expose the truth in Sri Lanka

Displaced people in Menik Farm Internally Displaced Peson's camp,

Despite the end of the 26-year war between the Sri Lankan Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) in May, the people of Sri Lanka are still suffering.

Around 130,000 civilians are currently still trapped behind barbed wires in horrific illegal detention camps. These camps remain desperately overcrowded and filthy. And now that the rainy season has started, the camps are at high risk of flooding leading to the spread of deadly infectious diseases.

The Sri Lankan Government recently announced they would close the camps but this belated promise is not enough. We still need to put pressure on the authorities to protect the rights of internally displaced people in Sri Lanka, and to provide them assistance with shelter, food and security as they re-establish their homes.

TAKE ACTION: Please write to Basil Rajapaksa, Senior Advisor to the President of Sri Lanka, urging him to make good the Government’s promise to release all civilians from the camps, uphold its responsibilities to care for the displaced people and to ensure all human rights abuses are investigated and the perpetrators are brought to justice.
